5 Best Home Improvements For Plumbing

Well, here I am, 40 years later at the tail end of a two-year project to install city sewers in my sub-division. I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve really never had any major issues with my septic tank over the years. I attribute that to regular treatments of a live bacteria enzyme along with good luck. Every one of my neighbors experienced many problems with their systems over the years and in some cases had to have their septic tanks replaced or at minimum pumped on a regular basis. By regular I mean every three months or so, the normal time interval for a pumping would be a year. The problem is that everyone including myself had their washing machines emptying into their septic tanks which in the septic world is the kiss of death! When the soap from the washing machine cools down, it solidifies causing the holes in the leaching pit to clog and allowing the water to back into the septic tank and then into the house. Not a very pretty sight! Eventually, everyone started to divert the washing machine waste in some creative ways. Some had dry wells installed in their backyards while others ran a 3″ piece of p.v.c. pipe under their front lawns and out thru the curb into the street.

No Cold Showers: because the water is heated up as you need it, there’s no running out and no chilly showers. By comparison, a 50-gallon electrical storage water heater can take over an hour to entirely recuperate the warm water. Lasts Longer: most tankless units have a 10-15 year warranty and can last approximately 20 years before needing replacement. Storage tank devices generally have a 6-year warranty and only last 8-10 years. This means that you may go through 2-3 storage hot water heaters in the lifecycle of one tankless device. No Energy Waste: you conserve energy by simply heating up the water when you need it. While container water heater waste power heating water you aren’t using, the tankless unit save energy by only making use of gas when you need warm water. Saves Space: tankless devices can be put almost anywhere in your home. It can be hung up on the wall, either inside or outside your house (depending on your location). Consequently, you gain useful flooring or storage room space. By contrast, a storage water heater is very bulky; a 40-60 gallon tank measures on average 60″ tall and 24″ wide (most of them are installed on the floor).

Risks and Problems: Orangeburg Pipe [Updated] The Orangeburg pipe situation has been a financial boon for plumbers and a financial burden for homeowners. Named after the town of Orangeburg, New York, where it was first produced, the pipe has about a fifty-year life span. Since the last of the Orangeburg piping was put down in the 1970s, the most recent installations are going to be facing their expiration very soon. If ignored, they could result in an extremely messy and extremely expensive sewer line collapse. A Quick Recap on the Orangeburg Pipe Problem Made of wood pulp that has been sealed with coal tar,  Orangeburg  has been described by some plumbing professionals as nothing more than a “coal tar-impregnated toilet paper tube.” That it has lasted as long as it has is some sort of miracle, many say. While a form of Orangeburg (otherwise known as bituminous fiber pipe) has been around since the late 1800s, widespread usage of Orangeburg began during World War II due to a shortage of more cast iron materials, which were needed for the war effort. Following the war, Orangeburg continued to proliferate because it was cheap. Sewer piping tends to be “out of sight, out of mind” until there’s, at a minimum, some sort of water backup. That’s just what happened to homeowner Erika Dronen. “We started having problems with our sewer line about a week after purchasing our home,” Dronen told  The Patch . “Black water started coming up from the drain in our basement floor.

The holidays are a time to enjoy with friends and family. However, Thanksgiving, and other seasonal holidays, present the perfect recipe for costly and embarrassing plumbing failures. With a little planning and insight from industry experts, you can prevent yourself from holiday hassles. Here are the top four tips from The Sunny Plumber to keep your pipe dreams in check. What’s the No. 1 issue consumers need to think about around the holidays to keep their plumbing working? One of the most common plumbing issues people face during the holidays is a clogged sink or malfunctioning garbage disposal. I always recommend being wary of the “FOG.” Fats, oils, and grease are your garbage disposals worst enemy. While this material is in liquid form when it’s initially poured into the disposal, it congeals into a viscous sludge as it cools. The FOG then sticks to the walls of the disposal chamber, as well as the walls of the drain pipe. This can gum up the impeller, as well as clog the drain.

Through many years of being the official flashlight holder, I became a skilled HVAC technician, learned invaluable business lessons and, ultimately, how to be the best at what I do and make customers happy. By the way, the boy on the logo is a digital re-creation of my son, Duncan, when he was 10 years old. I’m pretty sure he resembled me at that age. Q: Besides learning from your father, do you have any formal education in air-conditioning and plumbing? Do you think that having a technical background is essential to running the business side of things, and if so, why? A: My formal education in the trades came from the “school of hard knocks,” which I believe I may have enough credits (from) to earn a doctorate. I have attended many trade-related continuing education courses over the years and have read something trade-related every night for 25 years. Most of my management team, however, has no experience or training in the trades. It’s just a different skill set — leading Gordontheplumber.com Naperville Illinois Dupage County and managing people, as opposed to knowing the trades. North Korean television reported his heroic deeds, showing him dropkicking a dragon that had been devastating at least two small North Korean cities; saving a horde of thankful and beautiful women, all of whom had been hanging off cliffs; and rolling in a large pile of money while thankful children looked on.  “Unstable?” said President Obama in a press conference to alleviate the international embarrassment. “From what I’ve been reading in North Korean newspapers, Kim Jong is as stable and good-looking as it gets.” At press time, the North Korean leader was announcing the release of a “real life video game” which would feature worldwide nuclear assault. Pope to usher in new age of judgement, piety and hypocrisy. On Wednesday white smoke rose from the Vatican signaling the beginning of a new reign for the Catholic Church. One that will surely usher in the judgment and sanctimony long asked for by Catholics everywhere. “I plan to lead a more progressive church,” newly elected Pope Jorge Bergoglio said in his inaugural speech. “Hating on the ethnics is so outdated, we instead are turning our attention to the 21st century abomination, homosexuals.” This came as a surprise to many bishops who try not to talk about that, “seeing as that thing with the alter boys got a little dicey.” However Pope Bergoglio is a strong advocate of homophobia, and promises by the end of his reign, “everyone will be a bigot.”   As tensions build in the Korean Peninsula, a South Korean plays Starcraft There’s a lot going on in the Korean peninsula these days. Every day North Korea seems to be gearing up more and more for some weird modern war with their generally just kind of nice but eccentric neighbors. The Onteora Sewer had the privilege of interviewing a South Korean during this crisis. When asked about the impending war he looked up weary-eyed from his computer screen and said, “Yeah, the North Koreans are rough.” Turning back quickly, he took a big ol bite out of some greasy-ass pizza, pressed a few keys, and shouted, “Fuck the Terrans, Zergs for life bitch,” and won the hell out of a game of Starcraft. Enthralled with the skillful gamesmanship, our reporter continued watching, giving advice occasionally, but mainly basking in the heartfelt devotion that was a video game being played right.

Obama and Putin spend romantic weekend together after accidental booking of couples retreat. An error last weekend led to the booking of a couples weekend for world leaders Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin. The two planned to focus on increasing diplomatic relations between the US and Russia in coming months and years. “The weekend was lovely,” a relaxed and lackadaisical Obama told reporters. “Watching the sun set in our side by side bathtubs really allowed me and Vlad to get down to the real issues.” Although the summit meeting had a rocky start when Mr. Putin found it difficult to fall asleep in the shared heart-shaped water bed, the ocean sound generator provided by the resort quickly calmed him down. The retreat, rumoured to have involved deep tissue massages and detoxifying seaweed body wraps is being praised by US and Russian media alike as both nations look for stronger post-Cold War ties and more “quality time”.

It’s a plumbers’ go-to product and a homeowners best friend. It can also be used to create anything a DIYer can dream up (from wine racks to swingsets, check out some of the most creative and innovative uses for PVC piping on the internet). What makes PVC—or polyvinyl chloride , if you ever wondered—so Gordontheplumber.com Warrenville Illinois special? It’s lightweight, crush-resistant, affordable, and available in various lengths. It’s strong under pressure, and rust-proof. Plus, unlike copper tubing, PVC resists corrosion and is very long-lasting, with replacement taking nothing more than a cut and some glue. But before beginning your next project using PVC piping, here’s five things to remember, with some important tips along the way. When cutting a PVC pipe, you want to use a fine-tooth saw with a 3-4-inch long blade (longer than that and it’s likely to buckle). While novices may reach for a hacksaw, its thin blade easily wanders making awkward cuts which may not fit as snugly into the fitting. Pro Tip: If you plan to do a lot of work with PVC piping in the future, purchase a manual miter box and saw . It’s cheaper than a power miter saw, and can offer more accuracy; the box holds the pipe in place for square or angled cuts, and the saw blade is short and fine-toothed with extra support to avoid buckling.

I find electrical tape, duct tape, wooded supports trying to hold everything together and it all eventually fails. When I work with thin gauge tubular waste pipes I like to use either the supplied rubber or beveled nylon washers. I’ll apply some mega lock pipe joint compound the to male end threads, and after I make the up the nuts with my channel lock pliers or pipe wrench. they’re pretty darn secure. I test for leaks by filling and draining the sink a few times and all is good to go. Right? Not so fast! It doesn’t happen often but on some jobs I ultimately end up getting a callback because the pipe came loose or fell which frankly could not have happened unless stuff was getting thrown around. The kitchen base cabinet seems to be the place where all the misc. junk seems to find a home. You open the door throw everything in and close the door and eventually it all piles up in, around and on the drain pipes.

I was replacing two copper emergency water shut-off valves under a pedestal basin. There was approximately 2″ of copper sticking past the wall and I started with the hot water on the left side. The old valve came off without incident and I quickly soldered the new one on. Lunch time! As I was cleaning up the area for my return I started to hear what sounded like a “crackling noise” and could not pinpoint what was happening. Well, my instincts took over, I put my ear up against the sheetrock wall above the sink and knew instantly that the fiberglass insulation was starting to burn. Without hesitation, I called down to the homeowner and told her to call the fire department and immediately grabbed my hammer to the wall above the sink. I reached in and pulled out the batt of insulation that was starting to take off and tossed it into the bathtub where I dowsed it with water. The fire dept arrived in record time and they came in gangbusters ready to destroy the place, but I begged them to hold off I’m pretty sure I solved the problem. They proceeded to look into the wall cavity with some infra-red heat detecting equipment and were satisfied that there was no need to open up walls.

5 Topics You Should Know Regarding Plumbing Today

But just because sewer pipes are “out of sight, out of mind” doesn’t mean they should be ignored. Here are six signs that your home may have leaking sewer pipes. You’ve checked the faucets, the toilet valves—even the outdoor spigots. Still, there’s that distinct sound of running water… and it’s driving you crazy! First, try taking an exact reading of your water meter. Then, avoid using the water and check it again in a couple hours. If it’s unchanged, the sound you hear is something other than water; if the reading is different, then water is flowing and you likely have a leak in the sewer line. If areas of the floor feel moist underfoot and you’re sure that Fido hasn’t just relieved himself there, you’re probably looking at sewer leakage. When you notice these damp spots, don’t just put down a towel and brush it off; if you allow more moisture to build up, then it will cause mold or mildew to grow in your home which can be extremely toxic especially to those with weakened immune systems. Foul, funky… whatever you call it, odd odors behind walls or under the floor are often caused by mold and mildew growth due to water damage and pockets of moisture. As with #2 above, it’s best to get to the root of the problem fast; after 48 hours, fungi begins to grow more rapidly.
